Tendulkar Junior on display at MCG
By Srini VasanMelbourne cricket fans witnessed a rare practice session at the MCG nets when the son of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar displayed his skills during an Indian practice session.
There were several fans that got to witness a rare sight as master blaster Sachin Tendulkar bowled to son Arjun Tendulkar for close to 30 minutes at the indoor nets.
Among those who manage to get a glimpse was former Australian batsman Dean Jones, who couldn't get enough of the rare sight as he watched the session like a hawk. After playing a few shots off Dad Sachin's bowling, it was Arjun's turn to bowl. He did bowl a few left arm seamers to the dashing opener Virender Sehwag.
Jones was chatting to Arjun about his array of shots and about his coaching and his interest in Twenty20 cricket. Jones remarked "I think it's very important for the kids to talk to more cricketers. Forget about all the coaching he will receive in the future , just spending time with cricketers at the nets should give him so much to pick up from."
On Arjun specifi cally he said "Oh mate, if he can pick up 1/100th of his dad's skills, he should be alright. He was just telling me about scoring a hundred at a recent school match. Also, I heard he got eight wickets in a game. I am sure his father is tracking his progress very closely."
This is not the first time father and son trained together as earlier during the England tour Arjun Tendulkar practiced at the Lord's cricket ground along with Indian cricketers. The 12-year-old was confi dent as he bowled to middleorder batsman Suresh Raina during a net-practice session in the presence of his father. Recently, Arjun emulated his father Sachin Tendulkar by giving a match-winning performance for his school Dhirubhai Ambani School in a Harris Shield match at Mumbai.
Arjun wrecked havoc in the opponents camp, taking eight wickets for just 22 runs. The Jamnabai Narsee School team was bundled out for just 105 runs in 25 overs. Sachin had also grabbed headlines with a splendid show in the Harris Shield around 23 years ago, playing for his school - Shardashram Vidyamandir, had teamed up with his buddy Vinod Kambli to put up a stand of 664 runs. When the innings was declared, Tendulkar was on 326 and Kambli was on 349.
Arjun bowled 12 overs at a go and made most batsmen feel uneasy against his bowling. The man in-charge of the Dhirubhai Ambani School team, Hariom Phull was quoted in Mumbai Mirror as saying, “He was very accurate with the new ball and kept taking wickets at every interval. At one point, they were struggling 60 for 6. Tendulkar bowling 12 overs in this heat is a very encouraging sign for us?"
"He has lot of control on his swing.?Junior Tendulkar, however, failed to fire with the bat as he was dismissed on the third ball during the run chase. That thankfully didn't cost the team as they ultimately won the match by five wickets.”
His teammates in Mumbai normally get excited when the little master himself attends the practice session, and say, “Yes, we meet him often. He usually comes on Sundays to watch the practice."
"He is a very down-toearth person and we feel no pressure talking to him. He gives us some batting and fitness tips, which we follow meticulously.”
Adding to this they said, “We have observed a funny thing about Arjun. Whenever Sir (Sachin) comes to watch his game, he plays a tight defensive game, otherwise he likes to play an attacking game and hits random shots.”
